Leadership Academy

Abstract:
In 2017, the Erie County Office of Human Resources identified a training need amongst one of our most crucial groups of employees- our supervisors. Across an organization with 1,200 employees and a multitude of management positions, there was a lack of centralized training that gave supervisors the tools and opportunity to learn effective leadership skills.In response, the Office of Human Resources developed a multiple-day Leadership Academy to fill this need. We view our supervisors as the most influential and significant determiner of our organization’s success. They are the link between department heads and staff, and have the greatest effect on the employee work experience.To date, 202 supervisors have graduated from the Leadership Academy (Please see Supplemental Document- Participation Graph). It is now held twice a year over the course of 4 half-day sessions. Our most recent session was held in February, adapted to be in accordance with COVID-19 social distancing guidelines. The Leadership Academy has positively evolved over the years and continues to improve with participant feedback and staff innovations.It has improved the knowledge, collaboration, motivation and confidence of our managers and in the words of one seasoned supervisor, “I wish I had learned this information when I first started.”
