Seed Library

Erie County, PA
Program Year: 2020

The Edinboro Branch Seed Library is a collaboration between the Erie County Public Library and the Erie County Department of Health (ECDH). Alex Whipple, Public Health Educator, works in the Safe and Healthy Communities program. This program is funded by a grant from the PA Department of Health with focus areas surrounding access to healthy foods for all people, but especially for those who live in food deserts. As the Edinboro Branch of Erie County Public Library is located in a food desert, the branch was an ideal location for piloting the Seed Library project. With grant money, the ECDH was able to purchase seeds in bulk, seed packets, silicon packets and a table for the project. The library was able to provide the space, a card catalog for seed storage, seed library literature, volunteers and staff to help get the seed library up and running. Randalee, the Edinboro Branch Manager, was able to confer with other seed libraries around the country for best practices in managing a seed library. After these crucial conversations, promotional and informational materials were created for ease of use and stored on top of the seed library. Now that the Edinboro Branch Seed Library is up and running, the hope is that it will become a sustainable addition to the library.
