Managed Intake and Enhanced Placement

Los Angeles County, CA
Program Year: 2021

Prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic and immediate closures of Los Angeles County facilities to the public, the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) implemented Managed Intake and Enhanced Placement (MI), an approach towards animal management that leverages community engagement and resources to achieve the best outcomes for stray and owned pets in our communities. This includes intervention and support services which allow the public to participate in finding positive outcomes for animals. Since its implementation in mid-March 2020, MI has resulted in a significant decrease in dogs and cats entering County animal care centers and an increased live release rate for those that do enter, including increased rates of stray animals being returned to their owners. MI has also led to DACC embracing greater innovations and technologies that will serve animals and residents in our communities for years to come.
