Fathers Toolbox

San Bernardino County, CA
Program Year: 2019

Abstract:
Beginning in August of 2018, the Father Engagement Coordinator of San Bernardino County Children’s Network Juan Solis, collaborated with San Bernardino County’s Performance, Education & Resource Centers’ Human Services Communications team to identify effective strategies to communicate messaging that promoted positive father engagement in San Bernardino County. (This is an important focus of Children’s Network as more than 35 percent of the homes in the county are single parent homes and many San Bernardino County children lack engagement with fathers. Through a collaborative effort, the two agencies identified video as a useful platform to communicate positive messaging about fatherhood.) “Fathers Toolbox with Juan Solis” was developed as an opportunity for Solis to put a father-friendly and relatable face on the government effort to support and encourage fathers. In brief episodic videos, Solis communicates quick tips about ways that father engagement can better engage with their children. In lengthier episodes, Solis Interviews County and community partners to highlight resources available to fathers and to put a face on the organizations that have services for fathers. Highlighting these agencies makes the agencies more approachable to fathers who may have apprehension about reaching out for services. Once produced by the Human Services Communications team, the videos are posted on social media, websites, shared in agency lobbies, and played at community meetings.
