Student Digital Library Cards

San Bernardino County, CA
Program Year: 2019

The San Bernardino County Library’s Digital Library Card was developed to allow all residents of the County to register for a library card online and immediately have access to all of the electronic resources available to all library customers without the need to visit a physical branch library. Following this implementation the County Library found that there was a great need and desire from students and educators alike to register full classrooms, schools and even school districts for Digital Library Cards. Listening to the needs and challenges of these individuals the Library developed a “Student Digital Library Card” program. Several obstacles such as privacy and expediency of the registration process had to be overcome but through the creativity and innovation of staff’s use of current systems the Library was able to develop a process to register hundreds or even thousands of students in a matter of minutes reducing staff workload and increasing interest in this digital library card program. To date over 5,000 students have received digital library cards.
