Military Outreach

San Bernardino County, CA
Program Year: 2019

Abstract:
San Bernardino County Department of Child Support Services (SBDCSS) recognized the need to expand collaborations with the military bases in the County to educate service members about child support services. Expanding on the already existing partnership with Ft. Irwin Army National Training Center in Barstow, SBDCSS reached out to 29 Palms Marine Corps Base in Joshua Tree, California. What initially began as informational presentation has grown. SBDCSS holds on-site presentations at the military installations to members of their Judge Advocate General (JAG) Offices. Members of the JAG Offices appear at SBDCSS child support offices for training and are able to see the process at Court. Most recently, both presented on a nationwide conference call to discuss the partnership. This valuable partnership has resulted in the exchange of important information between the agencies leading to military staff being more educated about Child Support Services and SBDCSS being more educated on the military processes as they relate to child support. The expansion has resulted in quarterly visits and collaborative training. Additionally, over 100 military legal, legal support and command staff have received critical child support knowledge so that they can better assist the soldiers and marines that they serve.
