Public Health Nurse Mobile Health Outreach Anatomical Models

San Bernardino County, CA
Program Year: 2019

Abstract:
The Public Health Nurse Mobile Health Outreach Anatomical Models program was introduced by the Department of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) in 2016, implementing the use of anatomical models of body parts to provide hands-on instruction to older adult clients. The program was introduced as part of the mobile clinics offered by the Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) Older Adult Community Services Program, which is a collaborative effort between DAAS and the Department of Behavioral Health (DBH). The mobile clinics take place in the High Desert region of the County and offer older adult clients the opportunity to receive specific basic check-ups. Implementation of the Public Health Nurse Mobile Health Outreach Anatomical Models program now fills an education and screening gap by instructing older adults on how to conduct proper self-examinations and identify potentially life-threatening health issues. This program also affords clients the opportunity to speak with a County Public Health Nurse (PHN) regarding their physical and mental health concerns, which can alleviate many of the behavioral health stressors an older adult client may otherwise experience. Early detection services are provided to promote physical and behavioral health in older adult clients.
