APS Postal Workers - Help Stamp Out Abuse

San Bernardino County, CA
Program Year: 2019

Abstract:
In an effort to facilitate and promote awareness of the reality of dependent adult and elder abuse, San Bernardino County’s Department of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) implemented a Postal Worker Awareness Program in December 2016 entitled Help Stamp Out Abuse. The program was initiated under DAAS’ Adult Protective Services (APS) and is aimed at:  Helping those who may be at risk but may be unable to recognize that assistance is available.  Advocating for those who may have lost the ability to speak out for themselves. The program encourages and equips postal workers to recognize possible signs of suspected abuse or self-neglect. It also supplies a card that provides a quick reference of various types of abuse and how to report them. The goal of the APS program operated by San Bernardino County’s DAAS is to prevent and remedy the abuse and exploitation of dependent adults 18 years and over, and elders 65 years and older. DAAS seeks to involve its internal services, outside agencies and/or services, and the public at large. This campaign promotes intergovernmental cooperation and coordination, while providing education to identify abuse through using one’s sense of sight, sound, and smell while performing daily, routine tasks.
