Second District Youth Council

San Bernardino County, CA
Program Year: 2019

Abstract:
The Second District Youth Council was formed in 2016 to give high school students an opportunity to learn about county government, explore career paths, develop leadership skills and organize community service projects. Since county government is often not taught in school, we need to educate youth about the functions and importance of county government. Through informative presentations, job shadowing opportunities and interacting with county employees, council members gain first-hand knowledge of county government. As students learn about the functions of county government, they are also exposed to various career paths. In order to prepare for these professional opportunities, students practice oral and written communication skills, resume building, and other important soft skills. This diverse group of students come together to discuss issues they identify in their communities and propose solutions through service projects. Over the years, the council has worked on a wide range of projects and has organized numerous donation drives, collecting thousands of items for those in need. Not only has this program served the community, it has also provided dozens of high school students with valuable experience and unique opportunities, including internships and job offers, personal and professional development, and a better understanding of county government.
