Zum Up Community Intervention Program

San Bernardino County, CA
Program Year: 2019

Abstract:
The Zum Up Community Intervention Program was developed to decrease the high rate of obesity in San Bernardino County, particularly in the cities of Ontario and Hesperia that serve as home to two of the County’s four Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC). This program uses Zumba as a way of promoting healthier lifestyle choices among children and adults through increased involvement in physical activity, weight management, and selection of healthier nutritional options. In 2018, the adult obesity rate in the County was higher than the state average (23%) and was one of the highest in California at 27%. Diabetes in the general population stands at 9%, but disproportionately higher at 40% among FQHC’s patients (2018 UDS). The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health (DPH) partnered with local government and faith-based organizations to increase physical activity and healthy nutritional options in the community. So far, the project has resulted in a significant reduction in BMI percentage among the program participants. During the project implementation, an advisory body was formed to monitor progress, make recommendations, and provide technical assistance to project staff as needed. The project impacted the following areas: 1. Policy change in the City of Ontario 2. Collection, analysis and reporting of quality improvement data to measure BMI change 3. Improvement in BMI outcome among program participants 4. Impact in community knowledge, beliefs and attitudes
