Program Year: 2020

Abstract:
The Virtual Wall of Faces (WOF) is an ongoing national effort dedicated to recovering photographs of each of the Vietnam Veterans whose names are inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (Wall) located in Washington, D.C. Erie County, Pennsylvania, has taken deliberate steps to embrace this initiative. The Virtual WOF initiative consists of volunteers across the U.S. tasked with locating photographs of each of the more than 58,300 names on the wall. Pictures collected are displayed online at VVMF’s (www.vvmf.org/thewall) Wall of Faces, which features each Veteran on a page dedicated specifically to them. Each county collects photographs of Veterans and submits them to the Wall of Faces.Nationwide this effort is by far the largest volunteer-driven initiative ever dedicated to assist Veterans and their families. To date, 45 states, three U.S. territories and the District of Columbia have found every photo of their fallen. This award submission outlines the manner in which Erie County, Pennsylvania, volunteers were recruited and directed to successfully support this initiative.
